Over 45's Vets Review

The Welsh Veterans Competition (www.vetwales.org)

Last season was the inaugural one for the Welsh Veterans League and it proved to be very successful. Bryntirion beat Abercarn 3-1 to win the Over 40s play-off final and Bryndeg Town beat Splott Albion 6-2 in the Over 45 final. There will only be an Over 40s league this season, however, due to a lack of teams in the older age group although there will be a cup tournament.

The Welsh Vets League played two "international" matches against the Bristol Vets League representing England, the Welsh Vets winning both convincingly. Frank Terrell of Taff’s Well managed the Welsh Over 40s team.

The Umbro Veterans Competition

Played like the old style Champions League with mini groups playing before Christmas the winners and runners-up go on in the main competition whilst the rest are entered into their own EUFA Cup second rank tournament. The competition is organised on a regional basis with a gradual expansion to the Final when the winners of the South region take on the winners of the North.

In the later stages most of the teams feature well-known ex-professionals, many of them former internationals still seen on television as managers, pundits or playing in the Sky Sports Masters series.

Games are played for 40 minutes each way and sides may name as many as 7 substitutes, 5 of whom may play on a roll on and roll off basis. In the Over 40s, 2 players aged 35-40 may be on the field at any time but the Over 45s are strictly Over 45. Competitive fixtures run from October to May and the finals are played at either professional or semi professional grounds of the highest standard.

Players

Taff's Well Veterans always welcomes new players and each squad runs on about 20 players per season. Most of the players have played with or against each other over the years (or both!) and the social side is as enjoyable as the playing.
